Weather

The 700 low-lying islands of the Bahamas stretch from just east of Florida down into the Caribbean, but most of the islands have very similar climates. The Bahamas’ temperatures are moderated by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, and because they are closer to continental North America and more easily effected by North America cold air systems, they are slightly cooler than other Caribbean islands. Average summer temperatures range from 80 to 90 degrees and winter temperatures range from about 70 to 80 degrees with the northern islands slightly cooler.

Currency

The official currency is the Bahamian dollar, which is fixed to the US Dollar at an equivalent rate of exchange of about 1 to 1. However, the US dollar is accepted widely throughout the islands as are travelers’ checks and credit cards.

Travel

Traveling to The Bahamas is simple and convenient. Daily flights arrive at the main airports in Freeport and Nassau while scheduled and charter flights are available to airports on some of the smaller islands.

Many Bahamian retail stores offer an astonishingly cheap assortment of duty-free luxury items from around the world. So, while the temperatures might be quite high, it’s a great place to find bargains on fine cashmere sweaters. Other bargains are on watches, jewelry, clocks, china, crystal, leather goods and fine linens. Look for shops with a pink flamingo decal on doors or windows, which signify they meet strict government guidelines and that all their brands are authentic.
