Pink and Turquoise waters of Governor’s Harbour
Governor’s Harbour is the oldest settlement in the Bahamas. The Eleuthera Adventurers arrived from Bermuda in 1648 and landed at Governor’s Harbor, which was first named Colebrook Town. This town, located near the center of Eleuthera, is the first permanent European settlement and home of the first Republican form of government in the New World. Today, residents number about 1,500 with some people boasting a direct lineage from either the Eleutherian Adventurers or to the American Loyalists who arrived 135 years later.
The Bahamas’ oldest township has beautiful old homes set amid bougainvillea and casuarina trees, charming shops, two grocery stores and some nice restaurants. The town’s century-old Public Library has been recently renovated and the town also has some lovely churches.
