Spanish Wells
St. George’s Cay, off the northwest coast of Eleuthera is the home to the small town of Spanish Wells. Residents are mostly white native Bahamians as the cay was first inhabited in 1649 and later by Loyalists who came from Carolina at the start of the American Revolution. The people have very strong family ties and many of resident’s proudly claim their heritage extends to the early pioneers. Those descended for a Loyalist are considered “newcomers.” Spanish Wells is a neat, clean little town with bright, pastel homes, two supermarkets and bakeries, four restaurants, two bars, a museum and a few variety stores. Many of the 1500 locals are fisherman who have an excellent reputation for their skill at catching spiny lobsters, or crawfish.
Spanish Wells has exquisitely beautiful pink and white sand beaches and water so clear you can see your shadow on the bottom. Snorkelers will enjoy exploring the Devil’s Backbone barrier reef that stretches from Spanish Wells to the northeast tip of Eleuthera. The reef is home to abundant marine life. Inland are golf cart and bicycle rentals, and cave tours.
