British Virgin Islands (BVI) Yacht Charters
|
|
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) offer glimpses of the old Caribbean and the luxury tropical lifestyle many crave. Try a lay-over at Salt Island. They still harvest salt from open-air salt pans there, as they have for centuries. You can indulge in ultra-civilized dining at Peter Island Yacht Club or Little Dix Bay Resort. Or rub elbows with the hard-core sailing crowd at Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke. With all this action, there are still plenty of quiet anchorages that allow you to kick back and just be pampered by your BVI charter yacht crew.
The BVI are more compressed than many island groups in the Caribbean, and the channels and bays tend to be calm and friendly. One great advantage of the sheltered waters and relatively short distances between islands is that you can exlore the area in intimate detail on your yacht's tender.

Travel
Commuter flights from San Juan land at Beef Island Airport in Tortola. Alternatively, yacht charter visitors can fly into St. Thomas and take a two hour ferry ride to the BVI. However, public ferries run only during the day, so visitors must land on St. Thomas by 2 pm to catch the last ferry.

What to Buy
Most of Tortola’s shops are on Road Town’s Main Street and are usually open Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunny Caribbee Herb and Spice Company specializes in Caribbean spices, teas, condiments and handicrafts. Pusser’s Store sells their famous rum, one of the best selling items in the BVI, as well as clothes. Philatelists from all over the world flock to the British Virgin Islands Post Office in Road Town for its unusual stamps and beautiful designs. Colombian Emeralds offers a broad selection of emeralds, diamonds, sapphires and other fine gemstones as well as a wide selection of watches. Trellis Bay, Beef Island is home to Aragon’s Studio, a workshop, boutique, and gallery of native Caribbean art and clothing. The studio has a strong connection to the indigenous Carib Indians. Besides making sculptures in copper and wood, Aragon has designed and printed an unusual range of hand printed T-shirt designs. Thousands have taken home his famous shirts which capture the spirit and vibe of the island lifestyle.
