A yacht charter in the Greek Islands is on a lot of people’s “life list,” and with good reason. The magical Greek islands have all the elements for a fabulous yacht charter – aesthetics, history, archeology, culture and romance.
Greece, located at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, has a coastline that extends for 9,350 miles. You can cruise around the mainland as well as the islands on your private Greece charter yacht, nipping in and out of fishing villages and small towns with winding streets speckled with taverns, Byzantine churches and tidy white chapels with sky-blue domed roofs. The colorful Greek harbors are marked by magenta bougainvillea climbing up the walls of the buildings, as well as cobblestone streets and miles of yellow fishing nets on the docks.
There are many different areas to cruise on a Greece yacht charter: the Aegean islands, the Ionian islands, the Dodecanese and the Cyclades. The most popular time to charter is June through September, though May and October are also lovely and much less crowded.
The Cyclades form the largest group of islands in the Aegean; 24 of the 39 islands are inhabited. The name dates from antiquity. Kiklos means “circle,” and the islands form a rough circle around the sacred island of Delos. Each place has something special, whether groves of olive trees, ancient amphitheaters, wild beaches or Minoan statuary.

Weather
Greece has a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures, a limited amount of rainfall, and an abundance of sunshine. However, there’s a variation in the climate of the sea and mainland. In summer, the dry hot days are cooled by the meltemi seasonal winds, while the interior mountainous areas have lower temperatures.

Travel
While arrival in Athens is the obvious choice for many air travelers, Greece has 15 international airports accommodating airplanes of scheduled and charter flights. Twenty-five domestic airports cater to internal flights. Greece also has an extensive coastal transportation network serving all Greek islands, the majority of coastal destinations in mainland Greece and a few international ports. The fleet of passenger ships, ferry boats and hydrofoils operate on domestic and international routes.
Best Buys
Each island and mainland area has its own specialties. In Athens, look for rugs and antiques as well as items from the National Archaeological Museum gift shop. Delphi is a good place for hand-woven sweaters, silver jewelry and wool blankets. Crete has locally woven rugs and reproductions of ancient Minoan ceramics. Mykonos has icon reproductions, gold jewelry while Rhodes is a good place to find hand-woven lace table goods and leather items. In Santorini, look for gold jewelry and various items with Minoan imagery, especially local art featuring the swallow. Throughout Greece you’ll find the glass beads for protection, worry beads, and cobalt blue glass disks with brace charms.
