Mykonos Town
Cosmopolitan Mykonos, which lies between Tinos and Naxos, is a favorite yacht charter destination. Mykonos is known for its jet set visitors, lively, diverse nightlife and quintessential Greek ambiance. The island’s largest town Mykonos, or Chora, has Cycladic architecture set around a picturesque fishing village bay. Whitewashed cube-like buildings fit snuggly together forming a maze of narrow alley ways.
The hills of surrounding towns are peppered with preserved windmills and hundreds of red-roofed churches creating a palate for the eyes. The island is also distinctive for its sandy beaches, pristine waters and sea-side tavernas. Many Greek and international celebrities summer in Mykonos and the island is considered a tony area of Greece, complete with expensive real estate and pricey accommodations.
Little Venice
Many yacht charter visitors are attracted to the nightlife of Mykonos, considered among Europe’s best. The island is rated among the top clubbing destinations and attracts world-famous DJs to clubs and bars. Favorites are Paradise, Super Paradise and Paranga. Mykonos is also a gay-friendly resort, so there are several gay clubs as well.
Attractions
Petros the Pelican
Petros the Pelican has been the official mascot of Mykonos for over 50 years and can be spotted at the town’s waterfront. In 1958 a local fisherman found a wounded pelican who nursed it back to life. Islanders named him Petros and he lived until 1986. Today three pelicans live around the main town of Mykonos and one has been named Petros.
Many windmills grace the island and have done so since the 16th century. Little Venice has buildings constructed on the sea’s edge with their balconies overhanging the water.
The Archaeological Museum houses marble sculptures, ceramics and jewelry recovered from Delos, Renia and Mykonos. The Aegean Maritime Museum displays models of a collection of ships from the pre-Minoan period to the 19th century - it's very popular among yacht charter visitors.
