Glamorous Capri has been a favorite haunt of discerning travelers since the reign of Emperor Tiberius who managed the Roman Empire from his home there for a decade, and it is a favorite destination for charter yacht visitors. Its fame was resurrected at the start of the 19th century by Grand Tour travelers and it was during this time that the island’s first hotel, the Hotel Pagano, opened. Thereafter writers, painters, poets, and artists were drawn to the island’s exquisite beauty. They were inevitably followed by the wealthy and famous, who contributed to the island’s current status as a chic destination.
The Blue Grotto in Capri
No yacht charter visit to Capri is complete without seeing the Blue Grotto, known for the intense blue tones of its interior and the silver light emanating from objects immersed in its clear waters. In order to enter the Grotto, visitors climb aboard small rowing boats, and, lying on the bottom of the boat, enter the low, narrow mouth of the cave. Because of the small, jagged opening, entrance is not possible during southwesterly and mistral winds.
Other Must-See Capri Sites
La Piazetta
La Piazzetta is the focal point of island social life for tourists and locals. All who arrive in Capri must pass through the narrow passages of the various bars. It is from the Piazzetta that the funicular railway opens out onto a view of Monte Solaro.
The Faraglioni Rocks
The Faraglioni Rocks are three blocks of rocks that dramatically rise from the land and sea. Each is named and the Faraglione di Mezzo has a famously photographed natural tunnel while the Faraglione di Fuori is home to a blue tinted lizard which can only be found there. The area was a favorite of the ancient Romans and is now home to exclusive residences and hotels.
The View from Cetrella, Anacapri
Anacapri is worth a visit to see the Cetrella and Barbarossa Castle. Cetrella is a near the peak of Monte Solaro. In the 16th century the hermitage of Santa Maria Cetrella was built on the cliff edge above Marina Piccola. The view from here is considered the most beautiful of Capri with a panorama of the Gulf of Naples, including Capo Miseno, Punta Campanella, Mount Vesuvius and Ischia.
The ruins of Barbarossa Castle are located on the cliffs to the northeast of Anacapri. It was named after a fierce, Turkish, “red beard” pirate who conquered it in 1535. The ruins include fortress walls and two towers, a chapel, and two small rooms with a bell tower. Charter yacht visitors will see migrating birds, as the site is also part of an ornithological center, as they tour the ruins and hike the nature trails that wind through the surrounding countryside.
