The largest of the islands in the Bay of Naples, Ischia is also a favorite with yacht charter visitors who enjoy its natural beauty and famed spas. They follow illustrious company as the first settlers were 8th Century BCE Greeks who founded the first Western Greek colony on Mount Vico. Next, Romans arrived and discovered the island’s abundant hot springs. Today, therapeutic spa treatment centers, including thermal baths, mud baths, hydromassage, physiotherapy and beauty treatments, are available throughout Ischia and fuel about half of the island’s tourist industry.

Ischia is the main town on the island for which it is named. It’s actually formed into two areas, Ponte de Lima and Porto Rotondo. The former is a fishing village built around the castle topped island. The latter is a thermal resort located in pine woodland that skirts a submerged crater. Popular spa centers are Antiche Terme and Nuove Terme, which offers water treatments containing salt, bromine and iodine.
