Pompeii Ruins

The famed ruins of Pompeii, along with nearby Herculaneum, located in Compania, are two of the most popular yacht charter attractions in Italy. The cities were completely buried during the two day eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The weight of the ash and pumice collapsed buildings and buried residents. Although lost for 1700 years, Pompeii was accidentally rediscovered in 1748 and subsequent excavations have revealed a well-preserved Roman Empire city and insight into the daily lives of its citizens. Visitors view a city frozen in time with many buildings, such as The Forum and the Villa of the Mysteries, well preserved. Other remains can be viewed in situ, providing an extraordinary view of ancient life.

Caught in the Ashes

Evidence shows a lively Pompeii. Graffiti is carved into walls and on the floor of one of the houses is the inscription Salve, lucru or “Welcome, money.” Other homes indicate the names of professions and some wine jars show clever marketing by combining the Latin name for wine with Vesuvius, creating the pun Vesuvinum.

Charter yacht Visitors can also view an amphitheatre, a Palaestra, or gymnasium, with a central swimming pool, and an aqueduct that provided water for street fountains, public baths and many private homes and businesses. In addition, there are numerous well-preserved frescoes which provide further insight into the culture. For instance, a large collection of erotic votive objects and frescoes suggests phallic worship. Other sites include a food market, mill, bars, and a hotel.

"We had never heard of the Pontine Islands before you suggested them. Italy has so much to offer and so many islands to see, and of course, who can miss Capri. This charter was once again, way beyond expectations."
