Sunset in Newport Harbor
Sunset in Newport Harbor

Newport, renowned as the City-by-the-Sea, is one of the top yacht charter destinations in New England. Newport is well known for its maritime history and as the glorious stage of past America’s Cup races. Yet, past the magnificent harbor and only a few steps from any of the city’s marinas, yacht charter visitors will find fabulous mansions, colonial architecture and history, great music, trendy boutiques, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. You can live among history, from earliest settlers, through the American Revolution, to the great mansions built by 19th century industrialists. There is drama on every step of the Cliff Walk and turn of Ocean Drive and spectacular beauty among the beaches and harbor.

An hour spent enjoying the interactive audio and video exhibits in the Brick Market Museum of Newport History, touring The Redwood, America’s oldest library, or America’s oldest synagogue is 60 minutes well spent.

Wander off the beaten path and stroll some of the quieter streets on Historic Hill and the Point and your eyes will be opened to a side of Newport that you never knew existed. No other city in America has more restored colonial-era homes and buildings, almost 200, protected by the National Register of Historic Landmarks.

Nowhere else can you see or take guided tours of so many colonial buildings and grand mansions and learn as much about the lifestyles, tastes and diversions of those times. Each one is unforgettable and portrays the real life of real people whose names are part of American legend: Commodore Perry, Vanderbilt and Astor, Doris Duke, and Kennedy.

Attractions

The Cliff Walk, along the eastern shore of Newport, is a public access walkway that runs 3.5 miles along dramatic, sea swept cliffs on the ocean side and impressive lawn-swept estates on the shore side.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame is a hall of fame and museum located at the historical Newport Casino. Founded in 1954, it is one of the largest and finest tennis museums in the world that houses videos, photographs, audio recordings, tennis equipment and apparel, trophies, and art that highlight the history of tennis from its origins through to today.

The Museum of Yachting, located at Fort Adams, preserves the culture of yachting through exhibits and educational programs. The museum highlights America’s Cup yachts, classic yachts, single-handed sailors and model yachts.
