Huahine
Picturesque Huahine has many titles: “the secret island”, “the rebel island” and “the garden island” and each tells charter yacht visitors what they’ll encounter when they set foot on this wild, interesting gem known for its past, fierce warriors, its current resistance to change and relaxing ambiance. Essentially, Huahine is an old volcano whose sunken center was filled by the sea. Like Tahiti, the island consists of two mountainous masses: the large Huahine Nui and the small Huahini Iti. The geographically diverse terrain has long white sand beaches, fruit and vegetable groves, indented bays and lush tropical foliage creating a jungle-like ambiance.
Least explored of the Society Islands by yacht charter visitors, Huahine is a happy, peaceful place, where the traditional Polynesian way of life continues in spectacular scenery that rivals any on Moorea or Bora Bora. Lush with vanilla plantations, banana groves, and taro fields, Huahine is actually two islands basking in one lagoon, encircled by a coral necklace. The lagoon, bordered by white sand beaches, is rich with sea life. The bays of Maroe and Bourayne separate the two lands.
Huahine Landscape
Huahine is also the proud owner of one of the largest and best preserved archaeological sites: the Maeva marae, which is a group of a number of large marae at the foot of Mount Mouatapu and on the shores of lake Fauna Nui. Legends also abound in this island desired by Hiro and now adopted by artists in search of their roots.
