The small, mostly flat island of Formentera is known for its quiet, relaxing atmosphere and for its rocky, windswept lighthouses. Many see the island as a haven offering respite from the excesses of nearby Ibiza. There are few residents and few tourists making it an ideal destination for yacht charter visitors seeking solitude.

The capital is Sant Francesc Xavier, but the most frequented town is Es Pujols, which also has the island’s only resort. More recently, a few bars and restaurants have been built, but the island is still unspoiled by tourism. Transportation is necessary to tour the island as it is long and thin with few towns. However, cars and bikes can be hired at the port of La Savina and cyclists will enjoy the flat terrain and bicycle trails. Naturalists can see a wide variety of birds at the salt lakes of Estany Pudent and Estany des Peix. The island’s main attraction are its beautiful, fine-sanded beaches and clear, clean waters. There is excellent snorkeling, especially in the pristine waters at Es Pujols.

Formentera Anchorage

While most of the island is flat, it rises to 850 feet at Sa Talaiassa at its eastern pine wooded end where you can see the Mediterranean on three sides. Yacht charter visitors should not miss the 200 year old windmill where Bob Dylan stayed in the sixties and a cliff top lighthouse, whose uninterrupted vista to Africa inspired Jules Verne to write The Lighthouse at the Edge of the World.
