Ibiza Island Harbor
Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands, is famous for being the nightclub capital of Europe which came to prominence in the 1960s when artists, rock stars and millionaires flocked to the island and transformed it into a decadent playground with the title of "Ecstasy Island." Today, ordinary tourists flock there each summer and many yacht charter visitors are drawn to Ibiza’s racy reputation and 24-hour party scene.
However, Ibiza offers much more than all-night clubbing. It was the beauty of the island which attracted the first tourists and charter yachts, and that beauty is still in abundance. The island has many unspoiled towns and villages, hidden amongst lemon and olive groves, where visitors will find traditional Spanish life. The north of the island offers mountain and cliff top nature trails and uncrowded beach bars serving fresh seafood.
A walk around Ibiza Town reminds visitors that the sixties subculture group were not the first foreigners to arrive. The cathedral square of the old walled town offers spectacular views and historians believe this area, know as D’Alt Vila, dates back 2,500 years. The 16th century cathedral was once the site of a Phoenician temple and the bastioned walls were built to protect the city against North African pirates 500 years ago. Between the ancient city walls and the port lies the old fishermen’s quarter known as Sa Penya. This area is busy in the summer with tourists strolling the streets, enjoying cocktails and dining at excellent restaurants.
