View of the Bozukkale Anchorage from the Ancient Citadel
The Gulf of Bozukkale, a favorite yacht charter destination, is a well sheltered inlet at the southern end of the Kara peninsula. The bay’s entrance is still guarded by the remains of an ancient citadel which provides magnificent views. The well protected bay was strategically important to the Athenians who used it as anchorage for their fleet in 1412 BCE and in 395 BCE where they based their fleet before the Knidos war.
Loryma Fortress
There are three restaurants in the bay that service charter yachts, making this spot convenient for an overnight stay. An hour’s hike is needed to visit the ruins of the small city of Loryma, which was established in the 7th century BCE. Though abandoned after the Arabic invasion of 7 BCE, evidence of its important role in the defense of nearby Rhodes can be found in the fairly good condition of the fortified castle. |
