Dalyan River
The must sees of any yacht charter trip to Turkey are Caunos and Dalyan River, with their long, pristine sandy beach and unspoiled broad delta. This environmentally protected area has natural beauty and historic interest. After arriving at Dalyan Caunos Town, charter yacht visitors transfer to small river boats for the upriver journey. Along the way are flower-filled meadows that are framed by cypress trees, reeds, and a fish farm where the fish at the Koycegiz Lake are bred. The name Dalyan means “fishery” in Turkish and the river restaurants offer fresh, local selections. The famed Lycian rock tombs that are carved into the cliff face are located at the final bend.
Lycian Rock Tombs The 400 BCE ancient city of Caunos lies on top of a hill. It was once a Mediterranean port city but silt from the Dalyan River filled the harbor and today the town lies several miles from the sea. However, the short, guided tour highlights the theatre and acropolis as well as stunning views.
Caunos Ruins
After the Caunos tour the river boat continues up the river to the mud and sulphur baths where yacht charter visitors can immerse themselves for a hot mud “spa” treatment. The trip ends at the famous, long, pristine beach, which is a nesting place for the endangered loggerhead turtle. They lay their eggs on the beach so sections are not allowed for sun-bathing or walking. However, there is a simple restaurant by the river for lunch.
