Patara, Turkey
Patara, situated close to Letoon and Xanthos, is known for its archaeological treasures and its beautiful, 12 km long beach, which is an easy 15 minute walk from the major ruins.
Patara was a very wealthy Lycian city and its oracle at the temple of Apollo rivaled that of Delphi. In Christian history St. Paul visited Patara on his third missionary journey and it was also the birthplace of St. Nicholas. Much of Patara’s glorious past still remains buried in the shifting sand, but excavations are revealing many previously hidden structures, including an ancient lighthouse, bathes, the main avenue, the amphitheatre, and the Roman Ante Temple.
Patara Beach
The stunning beach of Patara is part of a national park, which is rich in birdlife and the breeding ground of the loggerhead turtle. In fact, the beach is closed after sunset from May to October to give the turtles peace when nesting.
