Sailing on Signe in Newport Harbor

Northrop and Johnson Sailing on S/Y SIGNE
Northrop and Johnson Sailing on S/Y SIGNE

September is one of the nicest times to sail out of Newport, Rhode Island, as the weather is still warm, the water warmer, and the air crisp and clear. Northrop and Johnson Yacht Charters was invited on an afternoon sail on Signe, the 115' Renaissance Sailing Yacht designed by Bruce King and built in Maine. This lovely ketch with a wood composite hull is a modern statement to the classic elegance of the traditional wooden hulled sailing yacht with a beautiful wood interior, full teak decks, brass fittings and lots of varnish. Built for 6 guests in 3 guest staterooms, each with ensuite bath, Signe has spent the summer chartering in New England and is set to sail to the Caribbean this winter and available for charter in these warm tropical breezes.

Northrop and Johnson Sails on S/Y SIGNE

Scottish Captain Alistair Marshall welcomed us on board where we were greeted with warm lobster rolls in bit sized pieces for cockpit nibbling. Alistair is well assisted by an additional crew of 4, which is an engineer, Chef, Mate and Stewardess. We sailed up Narragansett Bay, under the Newport Pell Bridge and up along the northern end of Aquidneck Island. Up in these reaches of the bay, we were able to watch part of the New York Yacht Club's Invitational Cup Regatta, with 17 teams challenging.
For charter in the Caribbean this winter or in New England next summer, Signe is a great boat to consider.

Newport International Boat Show 2009

Northrop and Johnson at the Newport International Boat Show
Northrop and Johnson at the Newport International Boat Show

The 39th Newport International Boat Show was held September 17-20, in Newport, Rhode Island and as always, Northrop and Johnson was there. The show was very busy this year, both on the docks, in the brokerage section and in the tents. And in general, the show was considered a success; at least Northrop and Johnson considered the show a success as we were very busy. If this activity is any forecaster of the economy, certainly, the yachting public is feeling more comfortable.

A yacht brokerage show is always organized at Newport Shipyard beside the other show docks, with launch service in between both areas. Northrop and Johnson had a presence at both the brokerage show and the Newport International Boat Show, and had brokerage boats in the water at the brokerage show for inspection and consideration. Let's hope that the next boat shows are just as successful this fall in Annapolis and Ft. Lauderdale.

Fall Intercoastal Cruise, Plan Now for Discounts

Every Fall, the crewed powerboats that have come to New England for summer charter, have to return to warmer waters for the winter. From New England, the trip is normally first to Florida and follows along the Intercoastal Waterway.Florida may be the end of the line, or the yacht be cruised further to the Bahamas or even the Caribbean. But what goes up, must come down, and as these powerboats cruise back down to southern climates, often discounted charter prices are offered for a charter cruise that happens "along the way".

Imagine sitting on the aft deck, watching the fall foliage as you glide down the Chesapeake. Or enjoy cruising under the Spanish Moss of South Carolina and points further south. As long as the charter begins in a port further north than the ending port and the yacht actually cruises a reasonable distance towards the ending destination during the charter, sometimes the charter price for the yacht and crew is discounted up to 50%. This can be a great way to explore the Eastern Shore of Virginia or see the Barrier Islands of North and South Carolina. And while you are on board, normal charter service prevails with full meals and a new destination each night. Dock right in historic Charleston or Savannah for a stroll through history at the end of the day after cruising through the inland waterways.

This is the opportunity for a one way charter without the penalty of a repositioning fee to return the yacht to the home port. And an opportunity to cruise an area that many miss at a great charter price, during a lovely time of year. If this is of interest to you, please inquire and we can discuss the various options available.

Great Summer Charter Discounts Offered in Med (if you are flexible)

Cinqueterre, Italy
Cinqueterre, Italy

Great Charter discounts are being offered in both the Eastern and Western Med for last minute travel for specific dates and locations. Unlike discounted pricing offers in theCaribbean this winter, these summer discount charter prices are not being reduced by certain Owners for the season; these discount charter prices are offers for "filling in the schedule". The discounts are great, but do require flexibility in order to take advantage of the savings.

Normally by now, the Western and are quite Eastern Med heavily booked with charters. This year, the number of charter bookings are probably at about 70-80% of last year, leaving a few weeks here and there free in the charter calendars of certain yachts. Owners interested in more booking more charters have been offering discounts for some of these empty weeks. The discounts are specific to certain yachts and certain dates in certain locations. However if you are a flexible, last minute traveler with an interest in different charter locations, there could be some great pricing offers available for you this summer in outstanding charter locations. Please inquire. Following is a sample of some of these discounted pricing offers.

Newport Charter Show; Great Yachts for New England

Another report today here from the June Newport Charter Show which is still a hotbed of activity. Charter Brokers from around the country are in Newport this week to inspect over 40 yachts that will be for crewed yacht charter this summer in New England from Newport and southern New England to Maine and even Nova Scotia. We have welcomed back yachts and crews that have been coming to New England for charter each summer for several years and also been pleased to see some new options just entering charter that will be available this summer for crewed yacht charter throughout the area. Both motor and sailing yachts are both power and sailing yachts are available in all size and pricing ranges. Read the rest of this blog for some of our favorite charter choices that we have seen this week.

Victorian Rose

Victorian Rose, a 63' Burger motor yacht, has been lovingly restored for the last 6 years by the Owner and his father and the work certainly shows. With new woodwork throughout, the yacht is pristine with gleaming varnish and new paint. We like the interior decor with plush furniture on the aft deck for many relaxing hours and meals in this lovely area. We have known the crew for years from other charter yachts and are very pleased that they are on board. At $13,000/week plus expenses and crew gratuity, this is a great yacht to consider for charter this summer in New England.

Muse

As always, Muse, the Palmer Johnson motor yacht is back with a great crew on board. Muse is offering some charter specials this summer that are hard to beat. At 122', Muse has 4 guest staterooms and plenty of comfortable relaxing space on board.

Titan XIV

And we are always happy with Titan XIV, the 114' Valdetarro sailing yacht for 10 guests, with a great crew. Titan XIV has been in New England for several summers now and the Captain knows all of the secret spots.

Northrop and Johnson Yacht Charters is located right in Newport, so this is our special location. We look forward to helping you with any New England charter this summer.

Newport, RI June Charter Show In Full Swing

Once again, June is here and the industry yacht charter show for New England is underway on the docks in Newport. Charter Brokers have gathered from around the world to inspect the yachts available for charter in New England this summer. And we are very pleased with the yachts that we are seeing in the show this year. There are a number of great motor yachts and sailing yachts. Today we spent some time on SEAHAWK, the Little Harbor 87' sailing yacht chartering for 6 guests with 3 crew. Following is more information on this great charter choice.

Seahawk is a beautifully maintained Little Harbor available from Newport to Maine this summer for crewed yacht charter. We welcome Seahawk back in New England after a world tour that included the Marquesas and other South Pacific locations. Captain Robert has been on board this yacht as the Captain for 14 years, and obviously not only knows the yacht well, but is happy to be on board. Robert keeps the varnish inside and out gleaming. The bed linens are beautiful, but what is really an eye catcher are the art works, ships models and other décor, such as Sailor’s Valentines that make this a special yacht. The Sailor’s Valentines were collected in Barbados. Whaling artifacts were collected in Bequia. A wooden statue stands guard over the main salon, found in the Marquesas. A Nautilus Shell found on the beach in Fiji has been framed for display. These items were all gathered from special locations where Seahawk has sailed and fill the yacht is a special personality created by the very sailing history.

Seahawk has 3 guest staterooms with ensuite bathrooms. Each stateroom has a double bed and the Master Stateroom has an additional single. There is a large center cockpit for on deck dining. And a nice comfortable main salon below. Seahawk is a great charter choice for your summer charter in New England.

Introducing the Historic Nantucket Lightship: Now for Charter

View The Nantucket Lightship's Video Above

Once floating fourty-five miles Southeast of Nantucket Island to warn cross Atlantic and coastal shipping of the notorious Nantucket South Shoals, the NANTUCKET LIGHTSHIP was the last lightship in use in the United States, decommissioned by the U.S Coast Guard in 1985, making it truly legendary.

Adding to this history, the Nantucket Lightship Keepers were the first weavers of the famous Nantucket Basket, woven on board to while away the hours keeping watch.

With a completely new interior, the Nantucket Lightship now provides an elegant living space, while staying true to its historical background.

NANTUCKET LIGHTSHIP is available for charter this summer in New England.

Marmaris Yacht Charter Festival

Marmaris, Turkey
Marmaris, Turkey

Once again we attended the Marmaris Yacht Charter Festival to see our favorite charter yachts and Gulets in Turkey, renew crew friendships and to see new additions to the charter market for the southern coast of Turkey. We were very pleased with the show this year and pleased with a number of the yachts and Gulets that we saw. There were over 60 yachts and Gulets entered into the show, so we were kept very busy. Read further for our thoughts and overview on this show and the yachts and Gulets that we loved.

Turkish Gulet Xenos III
Xenos III

There were over 60 yachts and Gulets entered in the Marmaris Yacht Charter Festival and about 80% were Turkish Gulets. We were very pleased with the quality of some of the new Gulets, and the one thing that we saw in Marmaris on board the luxury yachts and Gulets that we have not seen in other worldwide charter locations was the number of yachts and Gulets offering free on board unlimited wireless internet access. The GSM signal is quite strong along the coastline of Turkey and wireless is frequently available. What we are the most pleased about is there is no additional charge for wireless use and that the use is unlimited while on board.

Turkish Gulet Mare Nostrum
Mare Nostrum

Of the modern monohulls, Zarik II once again showed extremely well and is a very good modern monohull to consider for a charter. For the Gulets we were very happy to see a newly refit Primadonna, perfect for a smaller group with 3 guests staterooms. We also saw a new 79' Gulet, just launched, named Atalante, with 4 guest staterooms that is an excellent option also for a smaller group.

Of the luxury larger Gulets, we were pleased to see Blue Eyes for 10 guests, just entered into the Gulet charter fleet for this coming season, and Mare Nostrum for 12 guests, on which we had an excellent charter last summer. Both are very reasonably priced for the luxury, volume of space offered, and the crew service. In fact, no matter what the luxury level, we still believe that the Turkish Gulet is the best charter value in the world.

Turkish Gulet Clarissa
Clarissa

On a more moderate level of Gulet, where the charter experience is still great, we were pleased with Samarakind, Schatz, and Kirke. And we are always pleased with the sailing yacht Clarissa, which has Gulet styling, but truly sails well. In fact we feel that there could be a yacht or Gulet for everyone and no one should miss cruising along the southern coast of Turkey through the beautiful waters and historic coastline.

New and Improved Gulets! Marmaris Yacht Charter Festival

We are in Marmaris Turkey this week for the Marmaris Yacht Charter Festival and have been very impressed with the quality of the latest launched Gulets. The improvement is fantastic. The Owners have been listening to us Charter Brokers and are building Gulets that will give sailing and motor yachts true competition, and yet the Gulets are still a great pricing value. Now there are Gulet choices starting at Euro 9,000/week plus VAT and expenses for 6 guests up to euro 42,000/week inclusive of expenses for 10 guests that are well worth considering for a charter along the Turkish Coast.

80% of the yachts that are part of this Marmaris Yacht Charter Festival are new to the charter market place. For the Gulets that are new to the charter market place, either these Gulets were just built, or have been in private use and are now being made available for charter. We are seeing Gulets with wireless internet available throughout the yacht with a GSM cellular connection, which means that the signal is reliant on a GSM signal, however this signal is strong off of the coast of Turkey. And the internet use is free, included in the charter cost. Free wireless internet connection is not offered anywhere else in charter, that we are aware of, in other worldwide locations, so this is a true step up for the Turkish Gulet

The new Gulets are being built out of mahogany, rather than Turkish pine, with beautiful interior woodwork. Modern bathrooms, with separate dry showers and raised bowl sinks are now a common feature. And the crew have become more professional each year. Many of the larger Gulets also have at least one female in the crew for interior service. We were pleased to see some of our favorite Turkish crew members on the various new Gulets.

This is a whole new charter product that we are very pleased to offer in a very competitive pricing range in a great charter location.

Motor Yacht Galaxy; Genoa Yacht Charter Show

Yacht Galaxy
Galaxy

We were pleased as always to be back on board Galaxy with Captain Dughall and his wife Poppie as Chief Stewardess today at the Myba Charter Show in Genoa, Italy. Galaxy, at 56 meters, is a beautifully built Benetti, launched in 2005, with 6 guest staterooms for a total of 12 guests, each with ensuite bath. Besides a Jacuzzi on the top deck big enough for at least 8 guests at once, there is also an air conditioned gym with a great 360 degree view, and plenty of sun bathing deck lounges. Having just completed the winter season in the Caribbean for charter, Galaxy is back in the Western Mediterranean for the summer ready for another great charter season.

Dining on Yacht Galaxy
Dining on Galaxy

We have known Captain Dughall and Poppie for a number of years as they were previously on the charter yacht Talon and always created a great charter experience. Coupled with Chef Hamish, and 10 other crew, the food and service is top notch.

Following is the crew profile for Chef Hamish:

Head Chef Hamish Watson
New Zealand

Hamish is an exceptional Chef; his food is of the very highest standards. He is a fully qualified and experienced London City and Guilds Chef. Amongst his qualifications he has won several awards including NZ South Island Chef of the Year Award, and he came 4th in the Chain des Rotisserie World Championships in South Africa. Hamish is calm, organized, and is a popular crew member. He has travelled many places including Africa where he trekked through the forests to spend time with giant gorillas. He is adventurous and loves his sport. Hamish is a New Zealander and loves to spend time at home with his family and friends.

When we were on board today, Hamish had made Truffled Egg Custards served inside the hollowed shell of an egg perched in an egg carton. Not only was the presentation fun and very inventive, but the Truffled Egg Custard was terrific, with a light consistency that melted on your tongue. This could be a very hard charter experience to pass up, if you are thinking about a charter in the Western Mediterranean for this coming summer.

Motoryacht Lionshare; Genoa Charter Yacht Show

Motor Yacht lionshare
Lionshare

We were very pleased to revisit Lionshare, the 131' Heesen Motoryacht here at the Genoa Charter show. Lionshare has been offered for charter for a number of years, however continues to look very good. With Captain Greg Havens on board, and a great team of crew, totaling 8, this yacht continues to offer a great charter every charter. Captain Greg updated us today that he has now been on board this yacht for 11 years, so he certainly knows the yacht well! And, he continually keeps the yacht updated, maintained and refreshed to offer a great charter. The charter rate is outstanding as well, and still priced in USD, which is a great value for the Western Mediterranean.

Motor yacht lionshare's aft deck
View of Lionshare's Aft Deck

Lionshare is offered for USD 125,000/week for July and August and USD 110,000/week for June and September. This pricing is for the yacht and crew, and in addition are all expenses and crew gratuity. There are five guest staterooms on board, each with ensuite bathroom, so comfortable for 10 guests. Lionshare is located for charter in the south of France, but will travel anywhere for an extra positioning fee for charter in the Western or Eastern Mediterranean as they are very interested in charter this coming summer. With lots of water toys on board and a great sundeck, this is a yacht to consider with a great charter pricing.

Motor Yacht Impulsive; Genoa Yacht Charter Show

Motor yacht Impulsive
Impulsive

Impulsive is still in charter and looking good. We were just on board at the Genoa Yacht Charter Show yesterday. Impulsive is a 120' Norship, chartering in the Western Mediterranean this coming summer.

However, we were also pleased to visit again with Captain Alberto Batini. Captain Alberto was raised on the French Polynesian Island of Tahaa, and brings his own background and flavor to this truly international business of yacht chartering.

We first met Alberto in the early 1990's when he was the Captain of a 90' powerboat in located for charter out of San Remo, Italy. Alberto had worked with others to bring that motor yacht and several others to French Polynesia to the Society Islands for charter. Sadly the yacht sold before it could be brought to the Society Islands; however Alberto returned and stayed home for a number of years.

A vanilla plantation in Tahaa
A Vanilla Plantation in Tahaa

In Tahaa, Alberto has both a Black Pearl Farm and a Vanilla Farm, manned by his family and local workers. Five years ago, he left Tahaa and returned to the yachting world and has been working since as a Yacht Captain. Alberto showed us his personal vanilla bean stash on board Impulsive, which he keeps in a humidity controlled locker.

Charter guests enjoy a little extra on board Impulsive, such as vanilla bean coffee made with vanilla infused from Alberto's home grown vanilla bean pods from his vanilla plantation in Tahaa. You never know when you charter a yacht, what other great adventures and experiences you will encounter. Charter Impulsive, and be served true vanilla bean sorbet made from Captain Alberto's vanilla bean pods.

The world is truly your oyster, which is made ever apparent in the mobile and international world of yachting and yacht charter.

Motor Yacht Seaflower for Charter; Genoa Charter Show

Seaflower
Seaflower

Seaflower, the 131' Feadship built in 2002 has just become available for charter and is a great new addition to the charter fleet for the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. Comfortable for 8 guests, Seaflower has the quality interior styling and woodwork reflective of the Feadship excellence in craftsmanship. The main deck is completely paneled in Cuban Mahogany, with the lower deck is paneled in Walnut. Throughout the yacht the excellent craftsmanship is apparent. I had a lovely lunch on board today on the top sun deck beautifully prepared by Chef Malin Kollerstrom from Sweden.

Dining room in the yacht Seaflower
Seaflower's Dining Room

Chef Malin has been in the yachting industry for four years. Her cuisine is Asian continental, light and well flavored.

Our lunch today started with:
Mille Feuille with Char Grilled Vegetables with a Lemon and Rosemary scented Feta Cheese Cream
This was nicely presented with ringed with fresh herbs and was a nice light starter.

The main course followed with:
Fillet of Dorade on a Fresh Herb Bed with Grilled Mini Asparagus, and Roasted Fennel and Parma Ham Bundles with a Lemon Tarragon Sauce
The fish was very nicely prepared with a salt herb crust that melted into the fish. Served with the fish was a nice dry rose wine.

The dessert was outstanding:
Semi Freddie with Honey and Pistachio Nuts served with Crunchy Praline

And of course after, we had cappuccinos and chocolates. Any charter guest will be very happy both with the yacht and the cuisine while on board. We were very pleased that this yacht has entered the charter marketplace.
