Yacht Charter Sardinia; Explore the Costa Smeralda

Sardinia Private Bay
Sardinia Private Bay

55 kilometers long, this sliver of elegant coastline is located along the northern end of the island of Sardinia. This is created elegance, as the brainchild of the Aga Khan and a group of investors, this strip of land along the sea has beautiful white beaches, private jet and helicopter access, the urban planned town of Porto Cervo, and stylized landscape with homes built within a preset look, a rather stylized Tuscan look. The Costa Smeralda is a great yacht charter location, including the Maddalena Islands, and the southern coast of Bonifacio. Read the rest of this entry »

The Argentario Peninsula, Italy, Yacht Charter Itinerary

PORTO ERCOLE – SAN STEPHANO

PORTO ERCOLE

Join your charter in Porto Ercole, Italy with the guarding castles on either side. Stay overnight in Cala Galera Marina, dining at the nearby exclusive Il Pelicano Resort, tucked into the hillside near Cala Galera, and the Venetian style town of Orbetello featuring stone gates that mark the entrance to the Argentario Peninsula.  This area is known for rustic Italian cuisine with a local favorite, probably not on the menu at the Il Pelicano, being porcupine pie.

PONTINE ISLANDS

Cruise from Cala Galera to Porto Ercole anchoring just off of this quaint fishing village.  Take the dinghy in to wander the streets and explore one of the several castle fortifications still in existence, originally built to guard the coasts of this peninsula.  After an approximate cruise of two hours around the end of the Argentario Peninsula, come into the main harbor of the island of Giglio.  This quaint little fishing island is crowned by a walled medieval village, which is well worth visiting.  Wander the streets of the village exploring and shopping before spending the night in a protected anchorage along the beach.

GIGLIO

Leave in the a.m. for a morning cruise to the north side of Elba to Portoferrario, stopping in one of the many anchorages for lunch.  Elba is the largest of Italy’s Tuscan Islands.  Arrive and take a taxi to tour Napoleon’s Palace for it was to Elba that Napolean was exiled.  Explore Portoferrario and overnight in the harbor. Italy; The Aeolian Islands, The Secret Islands

Stromboli Volcano, Aeolian Islands
Stromboli Volcano

The Aeolian Islands sit right off of the northeastern side of a neighboring, but larger Italian Island, the island of Sicily. Not well known and not well visited, these are truly hidden secret islands. In fact, probably the easiest way to visit the Aeolian Islands is by yacht charter. And by yacht charter, you will be one of the few visitors and have a choice of anchorages and lovely isolated beaches to yourself. However the highlight of the Aeolian Islands is the active volcano on Stromboli Islands, as where else can you anchor underneath an active volcano and watch the active volcano “fireworks” while dining on deck. The Maddalena Islands, off the Coast of Sardinia

Maddalena Islands
Maddalena Islands

Have you heard of the Maddalena Islands? They are located right off of the coast of Sardinia, inside the Straits of Bonifacio. Budelli, Caprera, Razzoli, Santa Maria, Santo Stefano and Spargi are the main islands which surround La Maddalena Island as a group of islands most easily visited by yacht charter. The Maddalena Islands are often compared to the British Virgin Islands, as the Maddalena Islands are close enough to each other to navigate with dead reckoning, and the waters are crystal clear shades of blue, with many private coves and anchorages beckoning for a stop for a cooling swim. You could spend a week in the Maddalena Islands on a yacht charter, just off of the Costa Smeralda cruising between the coast and these idyllic islands. Read the rest of this entry »

Genoa, Italy; The Overlooked Yacht Charter Destination

Genoa, Italy
Genoa, Italy

Located right at the crook of the panhandle for Italy, along the Ligurian Coast, Genoa is often overlooked as a yacht charter port for this cruising area. While, in fact, Genoa is a great starting and or ending location for any charter in this area. The international airport is right on the harbor and only 15 minutes away from a boarding marina, and there are several very good marinas easily accessible. As a large maritime commercial harbor, Genoa offers great yachting facilities and of course, great fresh Italian food and wines for charter provisioning, including Pesto which originated in Genoa. But Genoa also has a fascinating history of its own and is worth spending an afternoon to explore. Read the rest of this entry »

Visiting Venice by Yacht Charter

Visit the Northrop and Johnson Yacht Charters Website

St. Marks Cathedral

Imagine pulling up in your own yacht and tying up the quay just down from St. Marks Square and listening to the bells of St. Marks Cathedral as they toll the hours. With enough advance planning, dockage reservations are available along this famous waterfront, with all of Venice, Italy laid out in front of you to wander as you will. Or perhaps to have a coffee at one of the many cafes along the edges of St. Marks Square with wandering musicians livening up the evening hours. And, of course, there are shops and great restaurants, although you may prefer to dine on board on the deck entertained as life passes by on the quay in front. Read the rest of this entry »

Vietri sul Mare, Italy, Amalfi Coast, Crewed Yacht Charter Itinerary

View the Northrop and Johnson Yacht Charters Website

Vietri sul Mer – Amalfi Coast

Located along the Amalfi Coast at the beginning of the Sorrento Peninsula is Vietri sul Mare, otherwise known as the “mother lode” of Italian hand painted ceramics. We wandered into Vietri purely by happenstance. While exploring the Sorrento Peninsula, we found ourselves on a main road of Vietri surrounded by shops and “factorias”, where ceramic objects of all sizes, shapes and purposes, were being made, hand painted and of course, sold.
