Stromboli Volcano Erupting
Located on the tiny island of Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands, and most easily visited on a luxury yacht charter, is one of the most active volcanos in the world. Eruptions continually light up the sky in a natural firework display rarely seen elsewhere. Called, in Ancient Times, “the lighthouse of the Mediterranean”, the volcano on Stromboli Island has been erupting for the last 2000 years. Dine on the top deck by the light of Nature’s Fireworks for a once in a life time experience on a luxury yacht charter vacation, anchored off of Stromboli.
The Aeolian Islands
The main islands of the Aeolian Islands, just off of the coast of Sicily, are Lipari, Stromboli, Vulcano, Panarea, Basiluzzo, Salina, Filicudi, and Alicudi. However, it is Stromboli, the northernmost island in the Aeolian archipelago that is the most spectacular due to a continuously erupting volcano. A great activity when visiting Stromboli, is to hike up to top of the volcano, to the “Sciara del Fuoco” which offers a terrific view of the surrounding Aeolian Islands. Allow 3 hours for the hike up to the top of the volcano, and two hours for the hike down and be aware that this is considered a strenuous hike for the physically fit only. If you work up an appetite on this hike, stop for a slice of pizza at the pizzeria built into the side of the volcano, where the pizza is cooked by natural volcanic heat. Stromboli is predominantly an agricultural island growing beautiful fresh vegetables and fruits in the rich volcanic soil and is a great place for experienced scuba divers to enjoy the surrounding waters.
A View of Stromboli from Mainland Italy
There are no airports in the Aeolian Islands. The only way to explore these islands, and to see this extraordinary volcanic action on the island of Stomboli, is by public ferry or a private #yachtcharter cruise.
