Giglio Island Port and Village

The archipelago of Tuscany is a favorite destination of many of our private yacht charter clients. Comprised of seven major islands—Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Gorgona, and Giannutri—there are plenty of ways to customize your itinerary to create a unique and memorable experience as you cruise the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. Today, we’re highlighting Giglio Island. The only way to reach the island is by ferry, private yacht, or private yacht charter, making it the perfect stop if you want to avoid crowds and take the more remote pathway.

Once in Giglio, take your time and explore the medieval walled village of Giglio Castello at the top of the island. You won’t find many tourists here. After taking the bus up the narrow winding road, the best way to enjoy the oldest town on the island is on foot. Meander the alleys and streets (don’t worry, you won’t get lost) and mix with the villagers as they go about their daily lives. Dine on hearty Italian fare, accompanied by a glass of Ansonco, the local wine. Best pace yourself though, as the wine is quite strong.

The crystal clear waters and sandy beaches of Giglio make it an ideal location for snorkeling and scuba diving. If you’re lucky, perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of some dolphins or whale calves from the deck of your charter yacht. Explore underwater caves and shipwrecks from the past. (Interesting side note: More recently, a cruise ship actually sunk along the coast here, but not to worry—it has been removed, and the island’s coastline is as pristine as ever.)
