Boothbay Harbor Maine Sunset

On a charter including Boothbay Harbor, Maine, during a two-week charter cruising between Boston and Bar Harbor on a luxury private yacht charter, it is hard not to notice two historic lighthouses that are part of the Maine scenery. The Ram Island Lighthouse and Burnt Island Light are sure to delight and relax.

Ram Island Lighthouse

An interesting fact: 21 different islands in Maine share the name “Ram Island.” In the 1800s, these islands served as stations to house rams and control the frequency of breeding within herds of sheep. The Boothbay Harbor Ram Island Lighthouse, however, is unique.

Before the lighthouse was officially approved in 1882, the area was made safe for passing sailors by lighthouse keepers who volunteered to maintain lights of their own. However, local legends claim that at least one ghostly spirit played a significant part in guiding sailors as well. Multiple reports say that a “White Woman,” sometimes along with a burning ship, a fog whistle, and even lightning strikes, would stand on the rocks with a light and wave passing boats away from danger.

Despite both the lighthouse and the guardian ghost, the Ram Island Lighthouse has seen more than its fair share of shipwrecks. This lighthouse has been through several modern upgrades and repairs, but its history remains just as fascinating as ever.

Burnt Island Light

Burnt Island Light offers plenty of wonderful opportunities for picnics, hiking, fishing, and general exploration. Approach from the water to get a close-up view of the interesting and varied coastline, or enjoy some of the sand beaches, rocky areas, forest, and meadows on foot by wandering down one of the island’s many nature trails.

Enjoy the “living lighthouse” museum program at  Burnt Island Light , which is a great tour to take. Actors in period-appropriate costumes recreate the family that used to live there, showing guests how the people of that time worked and maintained the lighthouse.

As you finish out the Boothbay Harbor portion of your luxury yacht charter, you may spot the whales that frequent these waters. Some can often be seen off in the distance, while a brave few may venture up close to your yacht!
