Stromboli Volcano
On Stromboli, a tiny island in the Aeolian Islands and most easily visited on a luxury yacht charter, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Eruptions continually light up the sky in a natural firework display rarely seen elsewhere. This volcano in ancient times was dubbed “the lighthouse of the Mediterranean”, as this volcano has been erupting continuously for the last 2000 years. The Aeolian Islands
The main islands of the Aeolian Islands, just off of the coast of Sicily, are Stromboli, Lipari, Vulcano, Panarea, Basiluzzo, Salina, Filicudi, and Alicudi. However, it is Stromboli, the northernmost island in the Aeolian archipelago that is the most spectacular due to a continuously erupting volcano. A great activity when visiting is to hike up to top of the volcano, to the “Sciara del Fuoco” which offers a terrific view of the surrounding Aeolian Islands. Allow three hours for the hike up to the top of the volcano, and two hours for the hike down. Be aware that this is considered a strenuous hike for the physically fit only. If you work up an appetite on this hike, stop for a slice of pizza at the pizzeria built into the side of the volcano, where the pizza is cooked by natural volcanic heat. Stromboli is predominantly an agricultural island growing beautiful fresh vegetables and fruits in the rich volcanic soil and is a great place for experienced scuba divers to enjoy the surrounding waters.

There are no airports in the Aeolian Islands. The only way to explore these islands, and to see this extraordinary volcanic action, is by public ferry or on a private charter yacht. Anchoring at night next to the erupting volcano on Stromboli Island and dining on the top deck of your charter yacht is a once in a lifetime experience, the memory of which is sure to never fade.
