Historic Mansions

One of the most special aspects of Newport to explore are the historic Gilded Age Mansions along Bellevue Avenue and Newport’s ocean edge. Once referred to as “Summer Cottages” for the rich and famous during the Civil War and through the turn of the next century, they are filled with outstanding art, furniture, mantels, and even complete paneled rooms brought from castles and estates in Europe. Many also have gorgeous views of the coast. The best way to see many of the mansions is via the Cliff Walk. This three-and-a-half mile pathway is beautiful at any time of the day—but most especially in the morning.

Nearby is Block Island—a small island just a short 12 miles away from Point Judith on the Rhode Island coast. In the morning cruise “Down East” to Vinalhaven. This nearly untouched scenic island is great for sight-seeing and swimming in a nearby quarry. The harbor is filled with little Maine lobster boats as this village is home to many of Maine’s lobster fishermen. Visit Seal Bay for breathtaking views. For a bit of civilization, head to Carvor’s Harbor to watch fishing and lobster boats sail in and out throughout the day, perhaps buying fresh caught lobsters or fish right from the fisherman.
Isle au Haut or Butter Island

It’s a short cruise over to Isle au Haut or Butter island. Either island is a great place to get some exercise and enjoy the views. Acadia National Park is a breathtaking national treasure and a “must-see.” Take a hike on one of the many park trails through bayberry and wild blueberry bushes, or pack a picnic for a late breakfast on the beach. After spending the morning exploring, head to Northeast Harbor. Take a stroll through the boutiques and art galleries before turning in for the night.

Depart for Frenchman’s Bay in the morning. Enjoy a scenic fresh seafood lunch on anchor by Cadillac Mountain and Mount Desert Island before heading to Bar Harbor for the night. Bar Harbor can be visited time and time again because of its gorgeous scenery and abundance of fun activities. Once a famous Gilded Age summer location for the wealthy, there are many mansions and museums nearby to visit. Important summer residents such as the Rockefellers provided the land for Acadia National Park which surrounds Bar Harbor. There are carriage roads, perfect for bicycling or walking through the forest, and many miles of hiking trails. Catch an afternoon tee time at Kebo Valley Golf Club or walk through the downtown village for some amazing local shopping.

Sail up through Eggemoggin Reach, a popular passage along Maine’s coast. Cruise into Buck’s Harbor after lunch to anchor for the night. Many refer to Buck’s Harbor as the best harbor on Penobscot Bay due to its friendly inhabitants and top-notch facilities. There is a beautiful pier with lovely surroundings for a quiet last night before heading back to Camden Harbor in the morning.
