The Greek Island of Tinos, located in the Aegean Sea, is the third largest island of the Cyclades group. The Phoenicians are believed to be the first people to live on the island during ancient times, followed by the Ionians somewhere around the 11th century BC. Over the next several centuries, the island would again change hands: the Eretrians, the Persians, the Egyptian Ptolemies, and, eventually, the Roman Empire all staked their claims at various times. Tinos didn’t find stability until the Venetian rulers in the 1200s AD were able to repel Turkish attackers and retain control of the island. In 1830, Tinos became part of modern Greece.
Despite—or perhaps because of—its tumultuous history and many international influences, Tinos became a cultural hotspot, a famous center for cuisine, and the birthplace of many Greek artists. Today, it is known as the Holy Island of the Cyclades because of its strong religious significance.
On a Cycladic Islands luxury yacht charter from Lavrion to Lavrion, travelers have the opportunity to experience Tinos, Greece firsthand. Here are some great things to do and see when visiting Tinos Island.
Visit the Church of Panagia Megalochari
This iconic church is located above the port town of Chora and is the island’s most important religious site. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is said to have been built on the site of an ancient temple. The church’s architecture is beautiful, and the statue of the Virgin Mary is touted as possessing healing powers.
Sample local foods
Tinos is known for its cheese—and olives, figs, and artichokes. Dairy farmers on the island have very high standards for their milk and cheese production, which results in Tinos dairy products being a delicacy for locals and visitors alike. Sample the local cheeses, such as Kopanisti or Tinian Tyraki, whenever possible, and pair them with delicious local meats for a savory and memorable treat.
See the Tinos Folklore Museum
In the town of Tinos, the Folklore Museum is dedicated to preserving the island’s rich cultural heritage. It features a range of local historical displays including traditional costumes, tools, and household items.
Relax on the Beach
The Cycladic Islands are famous for their natural beauty, and Tinos is no exception. If lying on a towel in the sun sounds more appealing than touring the town center, try the popular beaches of Kionia, Ysternia, and Pachia Ammos, or just cruise and anchor in one of the more secluded coves on the island off the beaten path and enjoy time relaxing and swimming in the beautiful waters of Tinos Island.
