Lavrion is perhaps best explored on foot before setting sail for the rest of a luxury yacht charter in Greece. From the 19th century and into the 20th, Lavrion functioned primarily as a silver mining town. Today, visitors walking around the city can see perfectly preserved 19th-century worker housing, the Lavrion Mineral Museum and Archaeological Museum, the Technical and Cultural Park, as well as several French Catholic churches and cathedrals.

Though the town of Lavrion is known for the French Mining Company of the 1800s, the local area history goes back much further. The archaeological site at Thorikos includes Neolithic artifacts dating back to 4000 BC or earlier, as well as ancient graves and tombs that show how prosperous members of the ancient society were laid to rest.
